Seoul International Drama Awards (SDA) Goes into 8th Year of

Recognizing and Celebrating the World’s Outstanding Television Dramas

Seoul, Korea – February 14, 2013 – With the aim of building a solid infrastructure for multicultural media content and development of the television drama industry, Korean Broadcasters Association and Seoul Drama Awards Organizing Committee launched a competition-based annual awards ceremony only for TV dramas in 2006 when there were no such awards shows in Asia. The ceremony is held in Seoul, Korea, a country known worldwide for producing trendy and creative programming.

Majorly supported and funded by The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and Seoul Metropolitan Government, SDA has been playing a critical role in introduction of multicultural media content by collecting a diverse range of top-notch international TV dramas and promoting them to the general public in Korea. Not only does SDA function as a market that pulls in foreign dramas, it also raises awareness and promotes sales of Korean dramas to foreign markets and networks that have not yet been reached.

“It is our way of giving back,” said Chong-suk Kim, managing director of the SDA organizing committee. “The rest of the world enjoys our Korean dramas so much, that we feel like we should give back to the industry and hand out awards for their outstanding shows as well.”

Since its launch in 2006, approximately 60 countries including the host country have cumulatively submitted their TV drama entries to the SDA to be widely screened and recognized by international media professionals and ultimately awarded at the festival. Those participating countries vary from relatively close Asian countries to South Africa, Australia, UAE, Brazil and USA – and the number of submitting countries is steadily increasing.

The organizing committee will be accepting entry submissions for the 2013 competitions through the SDA website (www.seouldrama.org/en) until Friday, May 10.

Now in its eighth year, the awards ceremony recognizing the best in global television dramas will be held on September 5 at National Theater of Korea and live telecast on MBC TV.
